One of the famous modern music in Algeria is Rai. In Arabic rai means the opinion. Rai is rooted in the north west traditional music of Algeria.
This music is based on the Arabic dialect of the west.The songs describe the problems that the Algerian youth face in their social life.
The relation between man and woman is always present in the songs. They are love songs. Most of the Algerian youth supported this kind of music because it reflects their feelings, their hopes, their dreams for a better life.
In the sixties and seventies, the algerian government was against this kind of music, first because talking about love or politics were forbidden in those decades.
Speaking about love and freedom were taboo subjects.
The youth supported the music and the singers called as "cheb" which means the young for men or "chaba" for women.
Rai music is a true music since most of the people welcome it and buy cassettes and cds. the songs tell true stories of love and despair.
They talk about immigration especially to France and other Europrean countries.
Many of algerian blame Rai music singers of using hard words and street like one that were not accepted by families.
In the eighties, many singers have changed their words to become accepted by all the people in Algeria. Some succeeded . Now you can hear this kind of music everywhere in Algeria.
This music is powerful that is now accepted by all the world countries.
When they just hear the songs . they say ohhh it is rai music.
I personally think that this kind of music was so powerful because of two major things: The first is that this music is based on what the youth feelings. It tells the stories of ordinary young.
the youth who was left alone without any help from the government. The youth who have no jobs, no money, no marriage. So what could the youth do?
They listen to music, because it is the only thing that gives them comfort in ahrd life.The second is that this music is modern.so it is accepted easily.
Well in the end of eighties, when the sun of democracy shows its first light, this music was the first to be dominent. After its success, in Algeria, it succeeded internationally beginning in France since all rai singers went there to make it known to Arabs and to all european people.
Now it is one of the most important music in north africa and in euope and middle east.
